Borehole Filtration System for a New Build in Halifax
Our customer recently had a borehole drilled and needed to identify contaminants in the water. To obtain accurate information, we promptly scheduled a site visit to collect water samples for testing at a UKAS-accredited laboratory, leveraging our engineers’ UKAS accreditation.
The analysis revealed, unfortunately, elevated levels of sediment, iron, and manganese, all exceeding the standards set by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) and the Private Water Supply Regulations. Additionally, although bacteria were present in relatively small quantities, they still violated regulations that require private water supplies to be free from bacteria. To address this issue, we installed a UV system alongside a prefilter.
We always install a prefilter before the UV system, typically featuring a 5-micron filter element to remove sediment before the water enters the UV chamber. This step ensures that all water receives thorough treatment from the UV light.
Many barn conversions, renovations, and new builds lack access to mains water, making a private water supply the most viable and cost-effective option.

Hard Water
Any water supply that has a high mineral content, may be classed as hard water. The most common minerals that cause hard water are calcium and magnesium. These minerals are picked up by water, as it passes through (typically) limestone rocks, on its way down into the water table.

Water in which the pH is below 7 is acidic. Acidic water accelerates corrosion in pipe work, It can also cause staining on fittings in baths, sinks and other appliances. Acidic water can leave a distinctive ‘metallic’ taste when drunk.
