The Problem

This customer was developing an old barn into a residential property and had rights to a spring supply feeding the property. The water contained sediment and also high levels of iron and manganese and bacteria. The water was also slightly acidic. The customer had found out that the spring supply had very low pressure, as it also fed next doors house too. This meant when the house next door used water the supply, pressure dropped for the customer’s property.

The Solution

The solution to the problem was to install a 3-stage sediment reduction system. This uses very fine mesh to catch the big particles of sediment in the first filter. This can be removed and washed out when needed. This is followed by a 20-micron depth filter and a 5-micron depth filter to remove all the fine sediments from the water. After this we installed a small cabinet ion exchange unit designed to soften the water, as well as removing the iron and manganese. This was followed by a PH correction system to correct the PH back to a neutral level. The clean water was then fed into a 500L slim line tank to be stored ready to feed the house with clean safe drinking water.

Other Remarks

The stored water was then fed by a variable speed booster pump to the house through a UV designed to kill the bacteria present in the raw water.

Useful Info

Why is flow rate important?

Different fixtures and appliances need to have a minimum water flow rate. If they don’t receive this (often because of inadequate water pressure) then it’s likely that they won’t work correctly. Equally important is the consideration of pressure being to high: this could cause damage to plumbing fixtures resulting in leakage.
